If you have more than two* months in DC, then this post might be of your interest! Forget about carrying your passport everywhere and request a DC ID (Limited Purpose Non-Driver Identification Card) at one of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the city. With this ID you can have the same benefits as a regular DC resident: use of the community center and all the facilities they provide (swimming pools, free classes like yoga or kickboxing, etc.)

*I did it after four months of being here, but checking the website it says now that you need to show a proof of 6-months DC residency

What do you need?

  • Collect your proof of identity: • Social Security Number If you have, and if you have not, a complete proof of SSN ineligibility form). • Passport
  • Collect proof of 6 months DC Residency: 2 of the following: Utility bill (water, gas, electric, oil, or cable), with name and address, issued within the last 60 days (disconnect notices/bills are not accepted) • Telephone bill (cell phone, wireless, or pager bills acceptable), reflecting applicant’s name and current address, issued within the last 60 days (disconnect notices/bills are not accepted) • Deed, mortgage, or settlement agreement reflecting applicant’s name and property address issued within the last 60 days • Unexpired lease or rental agreement with the name of the applicant listed as the lessee, permitted resident, or renter Unexpired Sublease accompanied by the original unexpired Lease with the name of the certifier as sub-lessor • DC property tax bill issued within the last 12 months reflecting the applicant’s name and property address • Unexpired homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy reflecting name and address • Bank/Credit Card/Investment Account Statement issued within the last 60 days reflecting name and address
  • DS2019
  • DS7002 (Just in case)
  • $20

What to do?

Just visit a DC DMV service center on a walk-in day with all of your necessary documents along with the $20 ID card fee (You can also make a Tuesday appointment for a Limited Purpose Identification Card at www.dmv.dc.gov. but they work until 4 p.m. only). They will take you a picture and will give your ID in less than 10 minutes!
