Virtual Leadership Institute

The Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute is a 6-month leadership development program for young impact-driven professionals who wish to join an online community of like-minded peers. The Virtual Leadership Institute provides valuable professional training to empower social change advocates, known as Atlas Corps Scholars, between the ages of 22-35 throughout the world.

The program features keynote speakers, interactive workshops, self-guided assignments, and community-building activities in collaboration with prominent U.S. organizations and leaders. A wide range of materials, frameworks, and tools are provided throughout the course to assist Fellows in their continued professional development, and implementation of projects within their local communities.

Enrollment in the Virtual Leadership Institute is possible as:

  • a stand-alone program, with a seperate application, deadlines, and eligibility criteria highlighted on the web page of each opportunity, or
  • a prerequisite for the Atlas Corps Fellowship, with the same application, deadlines, and eligibility criteria as the Fellowship.

Atlas Corps Fellowship

The Atlas Corps Fellowship is a transformative 12-month professional development program for global social change leaders. Atlas Corps Fellows are matched with U.S.-based Host Organizations to undergo intensive on-the-job training, complemented by professional development sessions provided by Atlas Corps, and networking opportunities with peers from around the world.

Candidates who advance to the Semi-Finalist stage are enrolled in the Virtual Leadership Institute, where their performance and qualifications are assessed for potential placement with a Host Organization. While enrollment in the Virtual Leadership Institute is a prerequisite for becoming a Fellow, it does not guarantee placement.

Once placed, Fellows commit to an average of 40 hours per week for 12 months of on-the-job training with their Host Organization. Schedules typically require meaningful overlap with U.S. business hours. Fellows receive a stipend to cover basic living expenses, including accommodation, utilities, groceries, and local transportation.

In addition to full-time service at their Host Organization, Fellows will participate in virtual orientation and training provided by Atlas Corps, and join our global network of approximately 1,700+ social change leaders in 117 countries.

While the standard length of the Atlas Corps Fellowship is 12 months, extensions of 6 months can be negotiated between the Fellow and their Host Organization.

The structure of each Fellowship is tailored to the specific placement opportunity offered by the Host Organization. There are two main formats of the Atlas Corps Fellowship:

1. REMOTE FELLOWSHIP

Fellows serve remotely from their home countries or countries of residence throughout the entire program. This format is open to candidates from any country outside the U.S. who have a stable internet connection for video calls and other software  required during the Fellowship. Atlas Corps provides financial support for necessary technology.

2. U.S. FELLOWSHIP

Fellows serve either in-person throughout the entire program or both remotely and in-person, with between 3 to 11 months in the U.S. based on the needs and requirements of the Host Organization. Atlas Corps supports U.S. Fellows in obtaining a J-1 trainee visa and provides assistance with arrival logistics. Upon arrival, Host Organizations offer workspace for Fellows. While regular in-person meetings are required, remote work may be possible based on organization’s work environment.
