Screen Shot 2014-08-01 at 12.15.12 PMWhen I first heard about Nexus, a global movement for over 2000+ young people from over 70 countries, I knew right away that I wanted to be part of the movement. So I was thrilled when I received an invitation to be part of the Fellows representing Atlas Corps at the 4th Annual Nexus Global Youth Summit that was held on July 23-26, 2014 at United Nations Offices, New York City.

The 2014 Summit brought together an international community of young philanthropists, entrepreneurs and influencers from over 70 countries.

During the opening ceremony, we listened to amazing stories from young people making change in Africa and other parts of the world. The event sparked an idea that has always been in the back of my mind for a while: providing a platform for young people to make change we want to see in our lifetime.

Change Heroes founder Taylor Conroy made fundraising look so easy when he shared his journey about mobilizing friends to raise thousands of dollars in the shortest amount of time. Although fundraising is not my cup of tea, I learnt a few tips about raising funds for a cause without making people feel that you’re pushing it down their throat.

Nexus co-founder Jonah Wittkamper, ended the opening ceremony with a powerful message of young having the power to make great impact by speaking with one voice.

The four-day event focused on four themes; Film, Impact Investing, Invest in Yourself, Philanthropy and Trafficking. I had the opportunity to participate in some of the breakout sessions and interact with a diverse group of people from different parts of the world.

Nexus gave me the opportunity to hear people’s stories up close and candid. It was an honor to listen to Jake Glaser as he shared his personal story, the challenges of being born and growing up with HIV. Having worked on HIV Prevention programs in Kenya, I am familiar with Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation work on research to end pediatric HIV/AIDS.
