Giving Tuesday is a movement to create an international day of giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. In the United States is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Giving Tuesday started in 2012. The announcement of this idea was made by Giving Tuesday founding partner Mashable, a technology website. Additional founding partners listed in the story were Skype (launching Skype for Peace) and Cisco. Other news and opinion websites that announced Giving Tuesday well in advance were the Huffington Post, and Deseret News. Even Forbes used the occasion to publish a guide to effective giving.

In 2012, donations were processed by blackbaud, in 2013 different organizations started processing money for Giving Tuesday, and in 2016 Facebook started receiving donations. In 2012, the amount raised by blackbaud was US $10.1 million, in 2013 the total amount raised was US $28 million, in 2014 the total amount raised was US $45.7 million, in 2015 the total amount raised was US $116.7 million, and in 2016 the amount raised was between US $168- $177 millions.

This year, Giving Tuesday was on November 28th, and according to the official statistics from Giving Tuesday Org, US $274 millions were raised online. Additionally, 2.4 million total gifts, with $110.98 mean gift size. Giving Tuesday has an important social media component. 1,010,045 total social mentions, and 21.7 billion total impressions on twitter.

Regarding the discussed issues, the most discussed topics were Public, and Societal Benefit, Human Services, Education, Health, and Environment and Animals.

Across the United States, more than 100 community coalitions. Giving Tuesday is an international movement, as people in more than 150 counties around the world participated in the last version of Giving Tuesday. Additionally, there are official independently led Giving Tuesday movements in 42 countries.
