Fellows

Abid is a mobilization, monitoring and evaluation professional, with five years of experience in the humanitarian and development sector of Pakistan. He holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur Sindh. Currently, he is working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization as a Social Mobilization (Team Lead) and District Focal Person in the Human Security Project, funded by UNTFHS. He is engaged in field operations, implementation, and as a liaison to the government and other stakeholders. He helped more than 2000 male and female farmers gain access to their social rights and maintain good relations with their landowners by signing tenancy agreements, along with economic development through on-farm and off-farm activities. His tenure helped develop his leadership, project management, rapport building and monitoring and evaluation skills. Beyond his skills and professionalism, he is very interested in youth empowerment through education and social entrepreneurship activities. He has voluntarily organized many sessions at schools in his vicinity to raise awareness for future opportunities for youth in education and development sector. Abid is an adventurous person, who loves to explore famous places, cultures, meet different people and learn new languages.

Host Organization: Creative Associates International

Role at Host Organization: Abid will be supporting the Business Intelligence Function with research and analysis of the international development market to help inform strategic decisions. He will be conducting research on Creative’s competitors, partners, clients, and news sites to analyze where the market is and Creative’s advantages and potential opportunities.

Angela Betancur has three years of experience in the nonprofit sector working with different social and development projects to support disadvantaged youth and women’s groups. Angela earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia and received formal training in Art Therapy to work with communities in University of Saint Buenaventura. She is currently working with the at-risk youth population in areas of drug abuse, crime, prostitution, and teen pregnancy. Through prevention campaigns and group interventions she works to restore youth rights. She also worked at an organization for rehabilitating people with physical disabilities and youths with cognitive and mental disabilities. Her work there also included supporting the families of the youths. After graduating from college, Angela worked as a Toy Librarian planning activities for children, teenagers, and their families while addressing possible abuses and rights’ violations. She also worked as a research assistant for two projects concerning migration and transnational families. She is especially interested in youth rights and women’s empowerment. Angela’s focus in college dealt with verbal and gestural expressions concerning gender-based violence in the school setting.

Host Organization: Latin America Youth Center (LAYC)

Role at Host Organization: Angela will provide individual, family and group counseling services, diagnoses, treatment planning, and community support to approximately twenty-two youths and their families. She will work to create individual plans of care for her clients while consulting with qualified practitioners in the field.

Donaldson has four years of experience in the nonprofit sector, and over two years of industry experience with the private sector. Donaldson earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Information Systems from the University of Sierra Leone, and a Six Continuing Units from George Mason University in the United States for successful completion of the IREX Community Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. He is currently a Master of Business Administration Executive Option student at the Njala University Sierra Leone. Previously, he served as District Program Manager for Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) on the Strengthening Accountability Building Inclusion (SABI) program, a UKAID-sponsored project and Project Manager for BudgiT Nigeria in the Accountable Governance in Justice and Security (AGJS) with support from USAID through International Narcotic and Law (INL). In this role, Donaldson worked with local authorities in justice, security, health, social protection, education, and local government to galvanize their attention on providing effective service delivery to citizens through accountability and transparency. Donaldson is an expert in civic accountability and transparency projects and has developed skills in open data, accountable governance, data analysis, proposal developments, and implementation. He has served as a Community Solutions Program Fellow with Glasshouse Policy Austin, Texas, where he supported their programs department to conduct a hack-a-thon event (Budget party). As a Fellow, he also planned baseline research for advocacy on broadband services to rural Austin and inputted in the data analysis for Capital Metro Project Connect in Austin. Donaldson is currently the founder and Managing Partner of Technocracy Innovative Network, a social enterprise that is serving Sierra Leone to improve open and transparent democracy.

Host Organization: Emgage

Role at Emgage At Emgage, Donaldson will serve as the Data Analyst Fellow: managing the various data systems that Emgage uses, including systems which house their voter files, users and donor files, and their mobile users’ data.

Ejaz has seven years’ experience of monitoring, evaluation, and research for diverse community development projects. He earned a Master’s degree in Management from IMSciences, Peshawar, Pakistan. He is currently working with the United Nations Development Program in a post-crisis situation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on enhancing the capacities of justice and security sector institutions with particular focus on gender responsive and community policing on the supply side and access to justice for vulnerable groups including women and children on the demand side of the justice and security chain. In his current capacity, Ejaz develops and implements M&E systems, devises protocols for research and manages teams associated with program and research assignments. He has been instrumental in annual project planning and aligning of interventions with broader sectorial and national goals. He is an expert user of data analysis software’s and analyzes large pool of data for reporting and program and policy decisions. Previously, he worked with a rural development program focusing on pro-poor value chain development and management, climate change adaptation and rural livelihood for indigenous mountain communities in Northern Pakistan. He secured livelihoods for poor small farmers particularly women and produced an experimental evidence base combining capacity building interventions and action research. Ejaz also worked with model legal empowerment of the poor program contributing to methodology design and managing field teams on an innovative impact evaluation combining RCT’s with case tracking and ethnography. Ejaz takes pride in his work and contemplates ways to help his community in securing a better quality of life.

Host Organization: Worldreader

Role at Worldreader: At Worldreader, Ejaz will serve as an Impact & Evaluation (I&E) Fellow, assisting the I&E Department in building and streamlining measurement and evaluation processes. He will develop M&E strategies, conduct data analysis, ensure proper maintenance of data storage systems, and complete special projects.

George is a development aficionado with eight years’ experience in the nonprofit sector and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology and Genetics from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. He possesses exceptional knowledge in project formulation, data management, and research assignments in various donor-funded health and education projects including those of the World Bank, USAID, and Global Fund. While working as a Programme Officer (Health and Education) with the International Institute for Local Development under the Literacy in Education project, he worked in collaboration with USAID’s Northern Education Initiative Plus (NEI+) to improve the literacy skills in public primary school pupils in focus states in Nigeria. Previously, George worked as an ENR (Enhancing Nigeria’s Response to HIV/AIDS) consultant with the Society for Family Health, where he helped improve institutional and resource capacity of both government and community actors and scaled up access to services and commodities related to health matters especially Malaria, Cervical Cancer, and HIV & AIDS. George believes in community volunteerism, which led him to join the Nigerian Red Cross Society as a Service Group Member. Through these experiences, he developed strong Monitoring and Evaluation skills in both education and health interventions. In addition to his multilingual skills in English, Igbo, and basic French, he is also very passionate about socioeconomic development strengthening and also fostering positive and sustainable change in his country and the world as a whole.

Host Organization: Sheltering Arms

Role at Sheltering Arms At Sheltering Arms, George will collect, compile and analyze programmatic data with a lens toward outcome study, development and implementation. He will work closely with the programs, quality improvement, and development teams and with senior leadership to identify and develop outcome measures to be utilized in designated programs.

Hajira has four years of experience in the nonprofit sector and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Kinnaird College, Pakistan. She worked as a marketer, recruiter, and fundraiser for nonprofits from around the world by applying her knowledge of management and starting an action group in 2010. Due to her strong communication skills, she was able to establish affiliations with international organizations like British Council and Peace Child International. Her four years of work experience taught her management and interpersonal skills, created in her a passion for campaigning, and showed her how progressive organizations can be by creating new partnerships. For a year, she served on the Steering Committee of a youth-led advocacy campaign ILMPOSSIBLE which is working on making sure that Pakistan’s government’s promise of free and compulsory education is implemented. Hajira is one of the few female delegates who represented Pakistan at various international events like the 5th World Youth Congress, Commonwealth Young Professionals’ Forum, and 4th United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Last year she spoke of her experiences as a volunteer and the importance of volunteerism at TEDxKinnaird. Due to her determination to help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals she has been recognized by organizations like the British Council that awarded her the National Active Citizen Award 2010, and the U.S. Department of State that granted her Study of the United States Institutes Scholarship on Women’s Leadership, 2011.

Host Organization: Meridian International Center

Role at Host Organization: Hajira will join Meridian International’s Global Connect division focusing specifically on international exchange for leadership development. She’ll leverage her skills and experience to support the development of service learning criteria and programming.

Hulu has four years of experience in the nonprofit sector, and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English. While working as a Project Coordinator with Shining Stone Community Action in Beijing for 3 years, she was responsible for trainings and community development projects. She helped build the capacity of residents, community workers, and nonprofit workers, government officials on governance, and conflict resolution, as well as participatory meeting methodologies. She also kept international communications and exchanges with trainers and facilitators around the world to learn and share experiences. Prior to this work, Hulu worked with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) in Amsterdam to advance mainstream of sustainability reporting and GRI guideline. Through these experiences, she developed strong communication, training, project coordination, implementation, management, and monitoring and evaluation skills. Hulu enjoys focusing on the topics of social enterprise, and corporate social responsibility, and has a strong passion for facilitation and international exchange.

Host Organization: Youth For Understanding

Role at Host Organization: Hulu will support the expansion of the mission of global citizenry through public diplomacy and international exchange; explore, develop, and implement new programs in Exchange with China; and access to volunteers within the organization to provide resource.

Hyun Shin has more than two years of experience in the nonprofit sector, and earned a Master’s Degree in International Development from the University of Sheffield in the U.K. While working as a coordinator in the Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (KSRPD), she operated the Secretariat of Asia Pacific Disability Forum (APDF), an international disability organization. She also contributed to international partnerships with Disabled People’s Organizations in Asia and Pacific region by organizing seminars and conferences in Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Indonesia. She planned and organized different projects for youth leadership. She also worked as an executive assistant and interpreter to the President of APDF for meetings at the UNESCAP and the UN Headquarters. Hyun-Shin did an internship at the Development Education Centre in South Yorkshire in the U.K. in 2011, and finished her research on “An analysis of children’s development awareness.” Previously, Hyun-Shin worked as a co-worker in the Camphill Community in the UK in 2004, where she was responsible for the house unit looking after residents with disabilities, and completed the National Vocational Qualification in Care. She also worked as an English teacher for Korean middle and high school students in private sectors for four years. Through these experiences, Hyun-Shin developed project management and coordination skills as well as teamwork skills. She enjoys focusing on the issues of international development related to disability, global partnership, youth participation, gender, and education.

Role at Host Organization: “Hyun-Shin will work with the Senior Policy Advisor of the Gender and Empowerment team, which is involved in a number of policy and influence activities related to gender integration, prevention of gender-based violence, and mitigation and prevention of child marriage. Hyun-Shin will work to support the team’s efforts to influence global discourse and policy implementation on these issues, and to monitor progress against the team’s influence and policy implementation goals.
