Twelve months ago when I was getting ready to move to DC I started doing some research about think tanks and other organizations based in the city. I was very interested in Foreign Policy discussions and also to get more involved in the progressive agenda of the city – which I was sure wasn’t going to be very active since it was the capital of “yankeeland”, home of hard core capitalists and supporters or war. What a mistake! DC still surprises me for hosting amazing progressive events, movements, marches and discussions, with amazing organizers, activists and grassroots organizations. I will share what I wished I knew when I first arrived here: where to go to find people and events committed to social justice, peace, democracy and REAL social change.

Of course there are tons of events hosted by many organizations in DC but the Washington Peace Center Activist Alert is a great source of information of what is happening in the district from lectures to demonstrations hosted by dozens of progressive organizations.  http://www.washingtonpeacecenter.org/alerts

Institute for Policy Studies. It is an amazing think tank that besides great reports and projects is hosting impressive activists all the time: http://www.ips-dc.org/events/

Busboys and Poets. They have few restaurants/book stores around the city, besides a yummy menu they host great events all the time: http://www.busboysandpoets.com/events/2015/3/27

Impact Hub. It’s a collaborative working space but also organizes very interesting discussions open to non-members: http://washington.impacthub.net/attend-events/

*For some revolutionary inspiration Joan Baez:

“No nos moveran” [We Shall Not Be Moved]
Sube a nacer conmigo, hermano
No volvera tu voz endurecida
No volveran tus ojos taladrados

Y dejadme llorar horas ,dias, anos, edades ciegas, siglos estelares

Dadme el silencio, el agua, la esperanza,
Dadme la lucha, el hierro, los volcanes
Apegadme los cuerpos como imanes
Acudid a mis venas y a mi boca
